Spotlight on: Caroline Brown, Senior Mortgage and Protection Advisor
What is a Mortgage Consultant? My role encompasses a variety of tasks including; identifying business prospects, training branch staff to generate leads for Andrews Mortgage Services and self-generating leads from missed opportunities.
A major part of my job involves dealing with clients and assessing their ability to gain and pay for a mortgage. I then give them the facility to buy a home, either for themselves or to let out, by matching them with appropriate mortgage products, protection and general insurance products.
To be successful as a Mortgage Consultant, you need to have a variety of skills. These include being able to converse with people at all levels, think on your feet, find solutions to client's problems and prioritise your workload so that clients don't miss out. As the branch is a fast-paced environment, it's also essential to be able to work well under stress and pressure.
Getting Started in the Industry
My career in the property industry began when I worked for Santander for 16 years. Through them, I trained as a Mortgage Consultant. However, I was only able to sell their mortgages and I wanted to be able to use all the lenders to facilitate a complete process from start to finish, rather than just sorting the mortgage and putting the documents in the post.
This dilemma brought me to Andrews – working for an agency was the best way to go, as I loved the idea of being somewhere that sold properties that I could get involved in.
Helping People to Find Their Dream Home
The thing I love most about my job is the ability to be involved in all aspects of the purchase and the satisfaction of being able to help clients find their dream home. They are completely reliant on you to do a good job, so you know you're really making a difference to their experience and this also results in more customer referrals.
A Day in the Life of a Mortgage Consultant
My typical working day starts with a morning meeting, in which the team gets together to discuss the branch’s performance. The rest of my day is divided between the following tasks:
Answering emails from clients
A large part of my job involves liaising with clients, and making sure that any queries are dealt with effectively and efficiently.
My role is about finding clients the best possible mortgage for them. I will therefore spend time researching mortgage packages that are compatible with each customer.
Ensuring mortgage transactions run smoothly
From chasing solicitors to chasing lenders for valuations, it's my job to make sure mortgage transactions run as smoothly as possible for the client.
Liaising with the sales team
It's important to interact with the sales team to establish any offers or valuations on properties. This also ensures that clients are receiving the best possible service.
Dealing with admin
As with any job, I have to do my fair share of admin. This includes tasks such as compiling a weekly report for head office and completing any other paperwork and electronic submissions.
